Over a dozen small and big Alam and Zuljinnah processions were taken out in the city and cantonment areas in Peshawar on Muharram 9 (Monday) which peacefully culminated after passing through traditional routes amid tight security arrangements.
In cantonment area here, main Zuljinnah procession was taken out from Hussainia Hall on Monday afternoon, which was largely participated by the mourners. A large number of contingents of police and FC Jawans escorted the mourners' procession to avoid any mishap.
The main Saddar Road was sealed and the traffic was diverted on alternative routes to ensure smooth facilitation of the procession.
In the city, Zuljinnah processions were taken out from Sain Gulab Shah Imambara, and Imambargah Bibi Sahiba while 10 to 12 small Alams processions were taken out from various Imambargahs.
These processions culminated at their starting points after parading their traditional routes.
Traffic on main GT Road was also diverted to provide ample space to the mourners processions, beating their chest with blades and chains.
The provincial administration had made elaborate security arrangements in the provincial metropolis to cope with any untoward incident, and maintain peace during Muharram.
All the sensitive areas in Peshawar particularly Kohati gate, Qissa Khwani were sealed to ensure smooth passage of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram being observed on March 2 (Tuesday).
The law-enforcement agencies, including regular Police, Frontier Corps, Frontier Constabulary, Frontier Reserve Police, etc have been put on high alert in sensitive areas of Peshawar, Hangu, Tank, DI Khan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Havellian and Haripur to handle the public order.
As an additional measure, the public sector hospitals, Wapda and Sui gas departments have also been put on alert while emergency control room have been established at district, divisional and provincial levels to monitor the situation.
Roof-tops and hill-tops in the sensitive areas like Hangu had been taken over by the personnel of law-enforcement agencies in the province.
Moreover, the district governments in Peshawar, Hangu, Mansehra, Haripur, DI Khan, Tank, etc had banned pillion-riding besides putting complete ban on wall-chalking, use of loudspeaker (except for Aazan) and distribution of objectionable materials.
The district governments have also banned the entry of certain Ulema, known for their fiery speeches for two months.
In all 54 localities have been declared sensitive by the provincial government of which 17 are in Peshawar and 28 in DI Khan.
